Early Feedback is Positive as Holland America Line Installs SpaceX’s Starlink on First Ship in Alaska

Next generation of internet launches on Koningsdam with preliminary success

Seattle, Wash., May 16, 2023 — Holland America Line guests and crew have begun using next generation internet with the introduction of SpaceX’s Starlink on its Pinnacle Class ship Koningsdam, now sailing in Alaska. The technology was installed during an April drydock and has been operating for four weeks.

Starlink is the leader in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology aimed at providing faster and more reliable Wi-Fi on a global scale. This is particularly important for internet access on ships in Alaska where weather interference and blockage from structures and mountains can challenge traditional technology.

“For our guests and our team members, maintaining the connectivity they are accustomed to at home is an important part of the cruise experience,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “Added bandwidth means our guests can share the joys of exploring Alaska in real time and our team can stay in touch with their loved ones back home.”

Since receiving the new technology, Koningsdamhas sailed an 18-day cruise roundtrip from Vancouver to Hawaii and has begun sailing its 7-day Alaska Inside Passage voyages from Vancouver, including Glacier Bay, Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

“While it’s early in our usage, the feedback from guests and team members has been very positive so far,” said Kathleen Erickson, vice president of technology for Holland America Line. “We’re hearing from guests that emails and social media are performing well, and team members tell us that internet calls home to loved ones are much stronger. That’s a connection that means a lot.”

“High-speed, low-latency internet is critical to our modern lifestyle. We’re excited that Holland America Line is seeing strong results in Alaska,” said Jonathan Hofeller, vice president of commercial sales for Starlink. “And we look forward to helping Holland America Line and other Carnival Corporation ships continue to bring the connectivity experience for their guests and crew into the modern age.”

Koningsdam sails with the Starlink internet capability this summer on over 20 voyages from Vancouver to Alaska’s ports. Further ships will add the technology later this year with the goal of Starlink being available across the full Holland America Line fleet.

SEABOURN INSTALLS SPACEX'S STARLINK WIFI TECHNOLOGY ON BOTH EXPEDITION SHIPS, SEABOURN VENTURE AND SEABOURN PURSUIT

Enhanced Internet Capabilities Will Offer Elevated Connectivity and Experience on the Most Ultra-Luxury Expedition Ships at Sea

SEATTLE, May 15, 2023 -- Seabourn, the leader in ultra-luxury voyages and expedition travel, has announced that its two purpose-built expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, will be equipped with next generation Wi-Fi connectivity with SpaceX's Starlink, the leader in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology. The upgraded technology will provide Seabourn's expedition guests with faster service, greater connectivity and more reliable Wi-Fi wherever Starlink's services are available.

Seabourn Venture is the first ship in the Seabourn fleet to offer Starlink's Wi-Fi technology beginning with its May 12, 2023 voyage, just in time for the ship's second Arctic season. The line's second expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit, will be equipped with the enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity after it launches in the summer of 2023. Seabourn's expedition ships will offer the best available Wi-Fi experience, allowing guests to stay connected with loved ones as they explore some of the most interesting and remote destinations in the world.

"We are committed to providing the best ultra-luxury expedition experiences at sea, and the Starlink partnership will offer a significantly enhanced connectivity experience during our expedition journeys," said Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn. "From the polar regions to Australia and the South Pacific, our guests will experience a more reliable connection, allowing them to share those special moments and experiences with their loved ones as they sail on Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit."

"Starlink offers Internet capabilities and functionality to meet growing service demands globally, and I am so pleased that guests and crew members on both of our expedition ships will benefit from this innovative technology," added Kathleen Erickson, Seabourn's vice president of technology.

Beginning May 12, 2023, guests sailing on Seabourn Venture will have access to the enhanced Wi-Fi service on board from the Arctic to Antarctica. The ship will sail on two voyages to British Isles and Ireland in May before kicking off its second season in the Arctic. Between June and August 2023, the ship will sail on a series of 14- and 15-day voyages to Greenland and Iceland, as well as a 23-day adventure through the Northwest Passage. The ship will then head down the West Coast of the Americas before reaching Antarctica, where it will sail between November 2023 and February 2024. In late February 2024, Seabourn Venture will cross the Atlantic, sail up the West Coast of Africa and Europe to be in position for the 2024 Arctic season.

Paddington Meets The Queen - Platinum Jubilee: Party at the Palace on BBC One revealed as P&O Cruises first Memorable Moment Award winner

May 15, 2023 4:45 AM EDT — ‘Paddington Meets The Queen - Platinum Jubilee: Party at the Palace, BBC One’ won P&O Cruises first Memorable Moment award at last night’s 2023 BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises, the only award at the ceremony voted for by the public.

The winning moment received 15 million YouTube views and was shown during the BBC’s coverage of the Platinum Jubilee: Party at the Palace. Carrying a tray of afternoon tea through Buckingham Palace, the footman (Simon Farnaby) places it onto the table of Her Majesty and her guest Paddington Bear (Ben Whishaw) wishes her a happy Jubilee. After drinking all the tea, Paddington offers Her Majesty a marmalade sandwich from under his hat, at which point The Queen reveals her own sandwich hidden in her handbag. As the footman announces that the Jubilee concert is about to begin, Paddington thanks The Queen “for everything”.

The accolade was presented to the voice of Paddington Bear, Ben Whishaw by presenting duo, Chris and Rosie Ramsey who said: “Presenting the very first P&O Cruises Memorable Moment award was a huge honour and to award it for such an iconic moment was so so special. The public overwhelmingly voted to crown this nominee as its winner and we couldn’t agree more! Paddington Bear in the palace, incredible!”

Claire Popplewell, Creative Director, BBC Studios Productions said: “We are so thrilled that what started out as an idea to celebrate the late Queen Elizabeth’s well-known sense of humour in her Platinum Jubilee year has evoked so many smiles and touched the hearts of people not just in the UK but all over the world. As well as being chosen as this year’s Memorable Moment from an outstanding field of fellow nominees, we also hope Paddington Meets The Queen will prove to be timeless - and we’re honoured to have been a part of this wonderful piece of television history.”

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “Television has the power to entertain, inspire and move audiences and 2022 was another phenomenal year for showcasing the best of the best in British entertainment. We are delighted that the public voted for such an incredibly touching piece of TV history as its deserved winner. Watching it when it was first broadcast, now or in 50 years’ time, it can’t fail to bring a smile or a tear and there’s no greater possible entertainment accolade.”

The six nominees for P&O Cruises Memorable Moment award 2023 were:

  • Derry Girls, Channel 4 – The Finale, the people of Northern Ireland vote overwhelmingly for peace

  • Heartstopper, Netflix – Nick and Charlie’s First Kiss

  • Platinum Jubilee: Party at the Palace, BBC One – Paddington Meets The Queen

  • Stranger Things, Netflix – Lucas, Dustin, and Steve rescue Max from the demonic Vecna by playing her favourite song - Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill

A Star is Born - Princess Cruises Names Second Sphere Class Ship STAR PRINCESS

Newest Princess Ship from Princess is a Cruise Lover’s Dream, Sails Inaugural 2025 Mediterranean Season

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (May 12, 2023) – Princess Cruises, the most iconic cruise line in the world, today revealed the name of its second, sensational Sphere Class cruise ship – Star Princess, which will sail an inaugural season of Mediterranean voyages when she debuts in August 2025.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, Star Princess joins Sun Princess as the largest ships ever built for Princess at 175,500 tons and carrying 4,300 guests. The new ship is built on a platform that is distinctly different and unique to Princess, designed to simultaneously embrace the Princess heritage while celebrating the romance of the sea by offering more dynamic, outward views.

While 20 percent larger than any of the line’s existing ships, Star Princess design retains the more intimate settings Princess is known for, with a number of new and incredibly ground-breaking spaces such as:

  • The Dome, a transformational entertainment venue inspired by the terraces of Santorini;

  • the next-level Piazza featuring a glass sphere

  • the “see it to believe it” Princess Arena, a configurable, technologically-advanced main theater that allows Princess to produce a variety of innovative entertainment concepts; and

  • a majestic dining room positioned aft of the ship to deliver unforgettable wake views.

This second Sphere Class ship will also offer a number of spectacular features with an array of exciting new food and beverage concepts; a magnificent, expanded casino; a two-story Lotus Spa; and mesmerizing entertainment headlined by Cirque Éloize.

Guests also will love the expanded accommodations options with luxurious staterooms and suites, including the new Reserve and Signature Collections.

Star Princess also will showcase the exclusive Princess Medallion service that extends Princess’ leadership position in delivering exceptional personalized experiences.

The new ship will be the second in the Princess fleet to be powered by LNG fuel technology and also is being built with the most advanced sustainable innovations available.

Star Princess debuts August 4, 2025, sailing a nine-day Inaugural Italy & Greece roundtrip voyage from Rome (Civitavecchia), featuring the destinations of Corfu, Kotor, Mykonos, Santorini and Naples (for Capri and Pompeii), followed by a variety of 9- and 10-day cruises sailing from Rome, Athens or Trieste (Venice) that visit idyllic coastal ports. Star Princess cruises go on sale with the larger Europe 2025 program release on June 1, 2023.

“There’s much to be admired about Star Princess - her sleek, eye-catching design, spacious interiors, and of course, the remarkable views of the sea and sky, just like the features found on Sun Princess that have prompted cruise lovers to snap up inaugural year bookings,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “We’ve carefully designed these ships to feel familiar to our guests yet significantly advanced with lots of exceptional new and expanded experiences to embrace and explore.”

Princess’ first Star Princess ship initially launched in 1988 as Sitmar Fair Majesty. With the merger of Sitmar Cruises into Princess, she then entered service as Star Princess in 1989, and was christened by legendary actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn. The second Star Princess launched in 2002, as the third Grand-Class vessel playing an instrumental role in the evolution of the brand with popular offerings like Anytime Dining, the only dining program in the industry at the time to give guests freedom to dine where, when and with whom they wish.

Further details about Star Princess including dining, entertainment, onboard amenities and future itineraries will be shared in the coming months. Ship information and images can be found at https://www.princess.com/ships-and-experience/ships/st-star-princess/.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE PRESIDENT CHRISTINE DUFFY DELIVERS COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS FOR UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON HOSPITALITY SCHOOL GRADUATES

Duffy: Future Hospitality Leaders Must Innovate, Improve Society, Protect Natural Resources and Create More Inclusive Workplaces

HOUSTON, May 12, 2023 – Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy delivered the 2023 spring commencement address to graduates of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership at the University of Houston today. In underscoring the growing importance of hospitality in the global economy, Duffy stressed to graduates the importance of thinking about the future of travel and hospitality in the same regard as the future of medicine, technology, aerospace and transportation infrastructure. To read the full transcript of Duffy’s address, click here.

“It is an honor to congratulate this hardworking group of graduates and to welcome them, our future leaders, into the travel and hospitality industry as they embark on the next important steps in their lives and careers,” said Duffy. “The impact of travel and tourism goes beyond cruises and hotels and theme parks. Our industry generates tens of billions of dollars of economic activity and innovation every year across technology, sustainable energy, food security and water conservation, and construction practices. It’s a big responsibility, but after talking with the students here in Houston today, my optimism for a bright future is as strong as ever.”

In the address, Duffy reminded graduates they are entering a noble profession – underscoring the different ways the travel and hospitality industry makes a difference in people’s lives. Duffy’s speech stressed the economic importance of the industry, highlighting its potential to positively affect communities big and small. Duffy also emphasized the industry’s role in bringing together friends and families and helping to create memories and experiences that last a lifetime.

“Remember, no matter what part of the industry you choose, your work contributes to what are often the most memorable moments in people’s lives which is why as an industry we must stay diligent and focused on educating policy makers on the importance of travel,” she told the graduates. “We have a responsibility to lead beyond our own business and to set an example for other sectors in how we must innovate, improve society, protect natural resources and create a workplace that is diverse and inclusive.”

Duffy also told graduates about her own journey to become the first woman president of Carnival Cruise Line, the flagship brand of the world’s largest travel leisure company Carnival Corporation. Before she led the cruise line’s 40,000 employees across its 25-ship fleet, she was the president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents the $120 billion global cruise industry. Prior to CLIA, she spent 10 years at Maritz Travel Company, the world’s largest corporate meeting, events and incentive travel company. Her career in the travel and tourism industry started four decades ago, when she began working as a travel agent in Philadelphia. Now, she is widely recognized as an industry leader and earlier this year, she was re-appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. From 2020 to 2022, she served as the National Chair of the U.S. Travel Association.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE SPOTLIGHTS TEAM MEMBERS PUTTINGTHE ‘FAMILY’ IN ‘FAMILY FUN’ FOR MOTHER’S DAY

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE SPOTLIGHTS TEAM MEMBERS PUTTING THE ‘FAMILY’ IN ‘FAMILY FUN’ FOR MOTHER’S DAY

Mother-Daughter and Mother-Son Duos Reflect on Family Bonds and Ship Life

MIAMI, May 11, 2023 – At Carnival Cruise Line this Mother’s Day, two Carnival moms who share a special bond with their children as part of the shipboard team are sharing about motherhood as well as working and living at sea.

The two profiles that follow feature mother-daughter and mother-son pairs working on different ships across the Carnival fleet while serving the same mission of helping to provide fun and memorable vacations for families every day.

Madelein Marais and Charnè

Madelein Marais and her daughter Charnè are from South Africa. Madelein works in guest services on Carnival Valor, and Charnè works in human resources on Carnival Magic.

  • What does it mean to you to have your daughter also working at Carnival?

Madelein: It’s a privilege, and I'm thankful every time I hear nice compliments about her and how well she is doing. I had the amazing opportunity to work with Charnè on Carnival Dream and could see first-hand how she adapted to ship life and blossomed as a person. It is also so valuable to have her to talk to about ship life; she understands everything I'm talking about – even our special ship language.

  • Why did you decide to follow in your mom’s footsteps and work at Carnival?

Charnè: Every time we spoke, she would talk about how happy she is and how amazing the places she’s visiting are; she also spoke about how great Carnival is and that it truly feels like a family on board. I was finishing my degree and knew I wanted to travel the world and start building a new career, so Carnival seemed like the perfect place for me.

  • What’s your favorite Mother’s Day memory?

Madelein: Last year, she took me for a Mother's Day weekend while we were on vacation in South Africa. We did a wine tour together and talked and laughed as if the rest of the world didn't exist.

Charnè: I surprised her with a weekend away in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, and we visited some of the best wine farms; it was a great way to spend some time together and show her how much I appreciate her.

Loreta Torres and Psalm

Loreta Torres and her son Psalm are from the Philippines. Loreta works in guest services on Mardi Gras, and Psalm works as a healthcare assistant on Carnival Dream.

  • Why did you decide to follow in your mom’s footsteps and work at Carnival?

Psalm: Carnival made a great impact on our lives. With the help of Carnival, I was able to graduate with my bachelor’s degree, and now I am a registered medical technologist. I saw and felt how the company has taken care of my mom and treated her not just as an employee but as part of the family as well.

  • How do you stay in touch?

Loreta: We are always chatting. We call each other often, and luckily, once a month, we see each other when we’re in the same port.

Psalm: Thankfully the company provides a free chat service to stay in touch with family and friends. Also, whenever our ships meet, we can enjoy quality time together.

  • What’s your best Mother’s Day memory?

Loreta: He would always serenade me with his guitar and a meaningful song.

  • How will you celebrate Mother’s Day this year?

Loreta: Usually, we celebrate with dinner at our favorite restaurant together with his siblings, or if I was on board, they would buy a cake and show it to me on a video call.

Psalm: I usually send her a greeting message with a photo of me and our dog.

Carnival’s onboard teams will help families celebrate this upcoming Mother's Day by hosting appreciation events fleetwide. Guests on board this weekend may also choose from a variety of Mother's Day-themed activities, from a Famous Mom's Trivia game to special craft-making.

Seattle, Wash., May 12, 2023Holland America Line’s 2023 Grand World Voyage concluded today at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 128 days after it departed from the port Jan. 3, 2023. This is the first Grand World Voyage the cruise line has operated since 2020 and the 59th since its first world cruise departed aboard Statendam Jan. 7, 1958.

During Zuiderdam’s journey around the world, the ship visited 57 ports in 30 countries on four continents and cruised 35,651 nautical miles (39,875 land miles). Highlights included funds raised for Bernhard Nordkamp Centre in Namibia, Africa; blankets knitted by guests for Project Linus; and celebrating the company’s 150th Anniversary in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with Holland America Line President Gus Antorcha.

“Like our guests, we have been eagerly anticipating the return of our Grand World Voyage, and the 2023 world cruise was an exceptional journey for not only the places we visited, but the memories made along the way,” said Antorcha. “A world cruise is more than just a travel experience; it’s building a community of friends and family. And our guests generously gave their time and funds for some worthy causes during the journey, for which I extend gratitude on behalf of everyone at Holland America Line.”

Guests Raise Funds and Knit for a Cause

Zuiderdam guests raised $10,000 for The Bernhard Nordkamp Centre in Namibia, which was presented to the organization during the ship’s call at Walvis Bay. The BNC services approximately 150 kids in grades one through seven who come in after their school day to receive support, food, additional education and positive social interaction.

Continuing a tradition that began more than a decade ago on the Grand World Voyage, guests made 618 blankets for Project Linus throughout the sailing. Nearly 75 blanketeers and 20 non-knitting volunteers participated in the Project Linus endeavor this year. With yarn brought on by guests, donated prior to departure and funds given by Holland America Line, guests of all knitting and crocheting abilities made blankets for children in the United States who are ill, traumatized or otherwise in need.

Organized this year by guests Gail and Marty Gottlieb, the couple drove a U-Haul truck to Port Everglades for the start of the Grand World Voyage with one-million yards of yarn in over 40 different colors, along with hooks, needles and ball winders. The blankets will be picked up by the local South Florida chapter of Project Linus at the port.

Themed Events and Culinary Delights

During the voyage, guests dressed to the nines for events that featured a Grand Masquerade, Derby Night, Casino Royale, Mardi Gras Night of Music and “Once Upon a Time.”  More than a dozen casual, themed evenings around Lido pool included a glamp out, Burgers and Beer, Grand Fair, surprise party with the ship’s team members, Biergarten Festival, “Let Them Eat Cake” and “An Evening in France.”

2023 Grand World Voyage Highlights and Fun Facts:

Between June and August 2023, the ship will visit a number of remote destinations such as Scoresby Sound, Greenland, home to the largest and longest fjord system in the world; Pond Inlet, Nunavut, an Inuit community near the eastern entry to the Northwest Passage, and more.

On August 27, 2023, Seabourn Venture will embark on the line's first-ever voyage through the Northwest Passage with a 23-day adventure from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Nome, Alaska, that includes a pre- and post-cruise hotel stays in Reykjavik, Iceland, and Anchorage, Alaska. 26 sailings scheduled for first summer program in North America and the Caribbean

Port Canaveral, FL – May 11, 2023 – Marella Cruises’ Discovery sailed from Port Canaveral’s Cruise Terminal 5, kicking off a slate of 26 weekly sailings between now and November. The sailing of the Discovery is also Marella’s first from the United States.

"We are excited to extend a warm welcome Marella Cruises’ Discovery and honored that they’ve chosen to base their first homeport in the United States at Port Canaveral,” said Capt. John Murray, Port CEO. "Their decision to join us is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and only adds to our reputation as the world's busiest port. We are proud to be associated with a high-quality brand as Marella and look forward to providing an exceptional customer experience for their guests."

Marella is a division of TUI United Kingdom and Ireland and TUI World group. To that end, five flights will arrive weekly at Melbourne Orlando International Airport from the U.K. with roughly 1,500 British passengers weekly who will sail on each cruise.

In keeping with maritime tradition, Canaveral Port Authority Commissioner RADM Wayne Justice (USCG-Ret.) presented Marella Discovery Capt. Chris Douglass with a plaque welcoming the ship to Port Canaveral for the first time. The ship was escorted as she departed Port Canaveral out to sea with a traditional water gun salute led by Canaveral Fire Rescue’s “Fireboat 2,” and two tugboats provided by Seabulk and E.N. Bisso.

“It gives me a great amount of pride to welcome the Marella Discovery as Port Canaveral’s newest homeported vessel,” said Admiral Justice. “This exciting milestone marks a significant moment for our Port, and we look forward to welcoming passengers from around the world as they embark on unforgettable adventures from Florida’s Space Coast.  We’re honored to have Marella Cruises as a valuable partner in our community."
