SEATTLE, Aug. 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- From trending travel destinations to seldom-visited locales, Holland America Line's new 28-day "Arctic Circle Crossing: Greenland & Iceland" is a Legendary Voyage to Greenland, Iceland and Norway. Departing June 29, 2025, aboard Nieuw Statendam, the journey is inspired by the routes of Norse explorer Erik the Red who founded the first European settlement in Greenland.

Sailing roundtrip from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the cruise features 15 ports across five countries, passage through the Arctic Circle, an overnight in Reykjavik, Iceland, scenic cruising through Iceland and Greenland's spellbinding fjords and four maiden calls in Greenland. Cruisers on the "Arctic Circle Crossing" will set sail on one of Holland America Line's most intensive explorations of this region ever offered.

"Legendary Voyages give us the opportunity to create longer cruises that delve deeper into a region and include ports we don't normally visit, like the four maiden calls in Greenland on the new Arctic Circle Crossing," said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line. "We're taking this itinerary up to Norway's North Cape, then heading farther north in Greenland on both coasts and adding amazing opportunities in Iceland. At 28 days, it's the perfect length to showcase this area and give our guests an experience that goes beyond a brief introduction to the countries."

Highlights of the 'Arctic Circle Crossing' Legendary Voyage

  • 28 days, departing June 29, 2025, roundtrip from Rotterdam.

  • 15 calls in five countries (listed in order of visit): Ålesund, Trondheim, Honningsvåg (North Cape) and Tromsø, Norway; Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund), Greenland; Akureyri and Isafjördur Iceland; Nuuk (Godthåb), Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg), Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) and Nanortalik, Greenland; Reykjavik, Iceland (overnight); Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) and Invergordon (Inverness), Scotland; and Dover (London), England.

  • Maiden Calls, all in Greenland: Nuuk, Ittoqqortoormiit, Sisimiut, Ilulissat.

  • Crossing the Arctic Circle at several points throughout the voyage.

  • Overnight call July 20 and 21 in Reykjavik.

  • Scenic cruising opportunities: North Cape (Norway); Jan Mayen Island, a Norwegian volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean; Scoresbysund (Greenland); and Eyjafjördur and Ísafjardardjúr (Iceland).

What is a 'Legendary Voyage'?
These lengthier cruises, which range from 25 to 59 days, combine the ceremony of Holland America Line's
Grand Voyages while focusing on a singular region. They visit some of the most unique ports while offering guests an in-depth exploration. Shipboard programming is specially curated to share insights into the history and culture of the destinations visited.

Legendary Voyages are offered on a variety of the line's perfectly sized ships where guests enjoy the "best of" Grand Voyages on-board programming such as iconic theme parties, memorable sailaways and classic cruise activities to further enhance the experience.

Who is Erik the Red?
Norse explorer Erik Thorvaldsson, known as Erik the Red, was exiled from Iceland and set out to explore the land to the west, which he named Greenland. After establishing the first European settlement on an island near Qaqortoq, he returned to Iceland to bring more settlers back to Greenland. He is the father of Leif Erikson, one of the first Europeans to reach North America.

Cunard Celebrates Cruise Milestone with The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority in Victoria, BC

VALENCIA, Calif., August 16, 2023 – Cunard is proud to bring the ten millionth cruise passenger to Victoria, BC, where The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) welcomed them to The Breakwater District at Ogden Point on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. The passengers arrived on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth, marking 54 years of cruise ships visiting Victoria.

The cruise industry has grown since the first cruise ship arrived in 1969. “Ten million cruise visitors to Victoria is an incredible milestone. Cruise supports the region's visitor economy and creates jobs that support Victoria's economic recovery. Engineers, entrepreneurs, accountants, mechanics and others are employed due to cruise tourism in Victoria, with salaries totalling over $40 million annually,” said Robert Lewis-Manning, CEO of GVHA.

Each year, cruise visitors and crew contribute $56 million to the local economy, purchasing tours and local transportation, retail goods and food and beverages. Cruise lines spend $84 million on warehousing, ship agents, repairs and maintenance, port fees and docking services.

"Victoria welcomes and celebrates its ten millionth cruise ship passenger,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “The cruise industry is a valued and vital part of a regional visitor industry that continues to create countless career opportunities and support the livelihood of Victorians,” Alto added.

Two couples stepped off Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth this morning and were presented with a gift courtesy of the Bay Centre. Industry partners and stakeholders gathered at the port of Victoria to welcome these guests. “We’ve been married for 14 years, and we came on this trip to renew our vows,” said Emma Lonergan, a passenger from the UK.

“Victoria is a world-class city because it has something for everyone, from natural beauty, heritage and architecture to fabulous dining options and a warm community,” said Matt Gleaves, VP, Commercial, Cunard North America. "It is a much-loved highlight of Cunard’s voyages in this part of the world and holds great appeal for Cunard’s guests as well as from our sister brands across our corporation.”

Relaxation Room

Serene Spa & Wellness on board Seven Seas Grandeur, designed by the award-winning Studio DADO, offers a multi-sensory experience choreographed to help guests relax at every turn. The delicate design suggests rebirth and rejuvenation, and the intricate, lacey details create a sense of elegance and intimacy found in the world’s finest spas. Throughout, architectural details – metal canopies, lantern niches and the undulating lines of the walls – remind guests that, while this may be one of the most luxurious and relaxing experiences, they are at sea and surrounded by the ocean.

Treatment rooms are rich and inviting, while the relaxation room offers a sense of privacy and enchantment, as though guests are inside a topiary maze. Outside, three whirlpools and a lounge area provide contemplative and calming views in the fresh sea air.

Cunard Enables Shore Power Capability Across the Fleet

Cunard Enables Shore Power Capability Across the Fleet

VALENCIA, Calif., August 15, 2023 – Cunard achieves a ground-breaking milestone as the brand attains the capability for its entire fleet to connect to shore power.

Queen Elizabeth has been fitted with shore power capabilities and now all three Cunard ships – Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth – have the ability to plug into shore power, where available. The line’s newest ship, Queen Anne, set to debut in May 2024, will have the technology installed before her maiden voyage.

Shore power technology enables docked ships to connect directly to a specially fitted land-based source, allowing cruise ships to switch off their on board engines and operate on electricity sourced entirely from the local electrical grid, reducing emissions and noise while at port. The ability for the ships to plug in to local grids already exists at many key ports, including Queen Mary 2’s homeport at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and Queen Anne’s homeport in Southampton, England.

Katie McAlister, President at Cunard, said: “By adopting shore power technology, we are taking a significant step in our ongoing commitment to reducing emissions, minimizing our carbon footprint, and fostering healthier port environments. The introduction of shore power technology aligns seamlessly with Cunard's corporate vision and values, and we are proud to be able to take such a positive step.”

‘Relaxed Luxury’ Trend Drives Growth in European Waterways’ Boutique Hotel Barge Cruises

Please note: some posts may contain affiliate links which means our team could earn money if you purchase products from our site

‘Relaxed Luxury’ Trend Drives Growth in European Waterways’ Boutique Hotel Barge Cruises

Today’s affluent travelers want to enjoy first-class service and accommodations, but in a friendlier, more casual setting without “old-world” pretentions. This “relaxed luxury” trend is helping to fuel the increasing popularity of European Waterways’ hotel barge cruises.  Available in Europe and the UK, the company’s deluxe vessels are often compared to floating boutique hotels.  Guests enjoy luxury amenities that include ensuite accommodations, a spa pool, and stylish furnishing. An attentive crew is always ready to satisfy their every wish, and an onboard master chef prepares their gastronomic meals, which are paired with the finest local vintages. Yet, amid all the luxury and special treatment, the atmosphere is always relaxed. Guests don’t feel the need to follow a “black tie” or fancy dress code.

Meanwhile, European Waterways’ excursions feature private transportation and often exclusive guided tours where guests interact with local personalities. They might even share a private meal with them in their own château!

“European Waterways’ guests want unique and memorable experiences that immerse them in the local culture – not as detached observers, but as active participants in ways that enrich their lives,” said Derek Banks, European Waterways’ managing director.  “They return from their excursions to a table that is exquisitely set for dining and worthy of the finest restaurant. They might even be greeted with live jazz onboard. The meals are always lively, entertaining, and often memorable, with conversations that produce long-term friendships beyond the cruise.”

Epic Journey
European Waterways’ 12-passenger La Belle Epoque deluxe hotel barge is a prime example of the luxury that awaits the company’s guests. It features wood-paneling, custom-made seating, a spacious sundeck, and spa pool, as well as marble ensuite junior cabins and staterooms.  A six-person crew ensures that every guest receives personalized service throughout the journey.

Cruising the Burgundy Canal, La Belle Epoque takes guests on excursions that include a private champagne tasting at Maison Taisne Riocour Champagne House, as well as dinner with the Baroness Ségolène De Taisne at her Château de Ricey-Bas. Other excursions include a visit to the Abbaye de Fontenay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Doing it With Panache
Featuring one of European Waterways’ most diverse cruising schedules, the 12-passenger Panache hotel barge cruises Holland in the spring, France’s Champagne region in early summer, and Alsace and Lorraine from July to October. The vessel’s yacht-like design boasts brass and mahogany fittings, panoramic windows for an unparalleled view of the passing countryside, leather chairs and polished hardwood floors. It also has a spacious sundeck that is perfect for relaxing and alfresco dining.

In Holland, itinerary highlights include a tour of the world famous Keukenhof Gardens. In Champagne, guests are treated to a private tour and tasting at Moët & Chandon. They also visit Epernay, the self-proclaimed capitale du Champagne (capital of Champagne) and home to many Champagne houses. Here, they are treated to a private tour of the cellar of one of its many wine producers. In Alsace and Lorraine, guests  watch glassblowers in action, ride a 150-foot-high boat lift and enjoy the famous local flammekueche tart.

Guests will also take a ride along the Route des Vins d’Alsace (the Alsace Wine Route) and savor a private tasting, among other experiences.

The High Life
At 117 feet in length, European Waterways’ Scottish Highlander has every comfort needed to enjoy the magnificence of the Scottish Highlands. Its décor evokes a country house atmosphere with subtle tartan furnishing, wooden paneling, and leather Chesterfield sofas.  A well-stocked open bar features some of Scotland’s finest single malt whiskies.

Among the itinerary highlights are a private tour and tasting at Dalwhinnie whisky distillery. It is one of the few in Scotland that still uses wooden worm tubs, the traditional way of turning spirit vapor back into liquid.  Guests also visit Eilean Donan and Urquhart castles, as well as get “up close and personal” to a bird of prey demonstration on the banks of Loch Ness. If they wish, they can take a picture with one of the magnificent birds perched on their arm!

About European Waterways
Hotel Barging is a boutique, unique experience that offers an immersive and all-inclusive “gentle voyage of discovery” focusing upon the culture, history, fine wine, and gourmet cuisine of regions. Attendees are surrounded by rare memorabilia, magnificent posters, unique bars - each with its own personality and a gorgeous multi-room dining area.

This specially themed, seven-day cruise sails roundtrip from Los Angeles, with day-long stops at three popular coastal California destinations, including San Francisco and San Diego, as well as Ensenada, Mexico.

Magic Castle™ Conjurer’s Cruise will feature a host of magic-themed events and activities, including:

  • Performances by top magicians in the Princess Theater and throughout the ship including popular areas like the Piazza

  • Magic workshops and lectures for the curious

  • Fun events like a “Taste of Magic” offering refreshing magic-inspired cocktails and libations, and a “Magic of Cooking” demonstration

  • Interesting artifacts from Magic Castle’s™ collection on display

  • Magic Castle™-themed cocktail parties, dinners and brunches

  • Specially themed films on the giant outdoor Movies Under the Stars

  • A specially curated historical presentation with the founding family of the Magic Castle™ to hear firsthand how this establishment came to be and what continues to make it so beloved today

“With this inaugural Magic Castle™ Conjurer’s Cruise, for the first time, Magic Castle™ Enterprises will offer elements of the Magic Castle™ experience outside the walls of our members-only establishment,” said Erika Larsen, president of Magic Castle™ Enterprises. “The cruise will be a true celebration of the magical arts, connecting magicians from our acclaimed community with enthusiasts who are fascinated by this mysterious world. We look forward to sharing the magic as we sail upon the stunning Discovery Princess, making our way along our gorgeous, and native, California coast.”

The newest ship in Princess fleet, Discovery Princess offers an array of guest-pleasing features, from delicious dining options and a luxurious spa to lavish entertainment and expansive teak-planked decks perfect for sunning and relaxing. - Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces Its Newest Ship, the Second of the Groundbreaking Prima Class -

- Norwegian Viva to Homeport in Four Bucket-List Mediterranean Destinations This Summer -

MIAMI, Aug. 10, 2023 /CNW/ -- Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, with a 56-year history of breaking boundaries, today welcomed the very first guests to sail aboard the all-new Norwegian Viva, the Company's highly anticipated new ship and second of the Prima Class, as it embarked on its maiden voyage from Venice (Trieste), Italy.

Making a grand debut in Europe today, Norwegian Viva departed for its first spectacular nine-day journey through the Mediterranean, taking guests from Venice (Trieste), Italy to Lisbon, Portugal with stops in some of Europe's most incredible seaside destinations including Salerno, off Italy's picturesque Amalfi Coast; Cannes along France's stunning Cote d'Azur; and Ibiza, Spain in the Balearic Islands, among other superb destinations. Norwegian Viva will sail a selection of bucket-list worthy Greek Isles and Mediterranean voyages through November, before homeporting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December for a season in the Caribbean.

"This summer, our guests will have the opportunity to explore Europe aboard our newest magnificent vessel, Norwegian Viva, while enjoying its well-appointed spacious design, elevated experiences, expansive culinary offerings and signature Norwegian Cruise Line hospitality provided by the best crew in the industry," said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.  "Norwegian Viva's tagline is 'Live it Up,' and I have no doubt our guests will be doing just that while they cruise to some of the liveliest cities in Europe and the Caribbean during the ship's inaugural season."

Mirroring the design of the award-winning sister ship Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva features standout onboard experiences including the Viva Speedway—the three-level racetrack; Indulge Food Hall, an upscale food market exhibiting 11 unique eateries; the fastest slides at sea, The Drop and Rush; and NCL's industry-exclusive sustainable cocktail bar, the Metropolitan Bar.

Norwegian Viva's upscale and spacious design is elevated by an expansive array of artwork across the ship, including The Concourse, a multi-million-dollar outdoor sculpture garden, and a dynamic, interactive 52-foot-wide art piece by contemporary British digital artist Dominic Harris. Exclusively created for Norwegian Viva, Harris' "Every Wing Has a Silver Lining" digital art piece is on display at Metropolitan Bar and dynamically responds throughout the day to passing movement, creating engagement with the viewer.  Norwegian Viva also features a world-class entertainment lineup, headlined by the side-splitting Tony Award®-nominated comedy "Beetlejuice The Musical" and the iconic game show "Press Your Luck LIVE," an immersive experience where the audience participates to win incredible grand prizes.

Following the ship's maiden voyage, Norwegian Viva will sail a series of Mediterranean and Greek Isles itineraries, before its official Christening ceremony in Miami on Nov. 28, 2023. Luis Fonsi, Latin GRAMMY® award-winning artist and godfather to Norwegian Viva, will attend the celebration to officially name the ship and will be joined by The Queen of Latin Pop, Paulina Rubio; "Saturday Night Live" cast member and Miami-native Marcello Hernandez; and singer Pedro Capó. The ship will homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a season of Caribbean voyages from December 2023 through March 2024 with calls to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. John's, Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

In May 2024, Norwegian Viva will return to Europe, where its Mediterranean itineraries offer an unmatched opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Europe. With an average of 10.5 hours in port, travelers will have more time to explore with fewer days at sea. Guests can unpack once, all while enjoying the ease and comfort of their world-class travel accommodations and the ability to wake up in a new destination as the ship transports them from one spectacular European city to another.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (July 31, 2023) – Princess Cruises has unveiled its 2025 Alaska cruise and cruisetours season, featuring three captivating roundtrip itineraries and an exclusive new National Parks Cruisetour. These remarkable offerings are available for booking starting August 3.

New Adventures and Extended Journeys Await, including a Departure from LA:

For guests seeking to sail from Southern California, a new 16-day roundtrip Inside Passage voyage from Los Angeles on Grand Princess offers a convenient and affordable option.

European Waterways Ramps Up Family Cruise Options; Says Multi-generational Travel is ‘In Full Swing’

With multi-generational travel resuming its rapid growth, European Waterways announced that it is expanding its Family Cruises to ensure guests of all ages enjoy the ultimate family vacation aboard their very own “private floating villa”. The company is offering guests greater flexibility to design itineraries that appeal to all ages.

Alongside the Classic Cruise itineraries, which often include visits to aristocratic estates and castles, châteaux, private wine tastings, and other exclusive cultural experiences, guests can customize their itineraries to include a number of activities such as visits to theme parks, the zoo and historical attractions, as well as horseback riding. They can also schedule outdoor pursuits such as biking, swimming, canoeing, tennis, and even hot air ballooning.

“The biggest challenge of multigenerational vacations is ensuring that everyone has a good time,” noted Derek Banks, European Waterways’ Managing Director. “We work with our guests to create the perfect itinerary to ‘keep the fun going,’ throughout the entire all-inclusive six-night cruise. We’ll help our guests plan every aspect of the cruise, including admission to theme parks, equipment rental and other details, freeing everyone to sit back, relax and enjoy the moment.”

A Private Floating Villa
Family Cruise itineraries are available across all European Waterways’ fleet of luxury hotel barges, which cruise the smaller waterways of Europe’s picturesque countryside. On board, a spa pool is a big treat for everyone, especially children, and the barge’s bicycles are ideal for exploring nearby villages and peddling along the gentle towpaths. The vessels rarely cruise above three miles per hour and are always just a few feet from shore, so it’s easy to keep up. The crew is especially trained to cater to multigenerational guests, with captains who are happy to “deputize” children as “captain for a day” to help steer the vessel where safe to do so, enjoy a fun cooking lesson with the barge chef, or even have a go at “lashing the ropes” with the deckhand. Local lock keepers will often gladly invite children – and fun-loving adults – to participate in opening or closing the locks too!

Meanwhile, guests enjoy exceptional gastronomic cuisines, with a master chef who will observe most dietary restrictions and cook meals to please every palate. They can also arrange for special treats, such as a barbeque on the open-air deck.

Among European Waterways’ hotel barges, the 12-passenger
L’Impressionniste, cruising Southern Burgundy, is ideal for larger groups, with a route that is close to a wide variety of outdoor activities and water sports. These include a water park with slides and a paddling pool; paintballing, the unique “bowling in the dark” game of laser bowling; canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. Other attractions include go-karting, quad biking for older children, and horseback riding. Based on 12 passengers traveling, charters on L’Impressionniste start at $67,000.

The eight-passenger
Enchanté hotel barge on the Canal du Midi offers similar outdoor activities as L’Impressionniste, as well as rafting, cave exploring and rock climbing. Unique attractions include the Prehistoric Caves at Limoussis, a series of underground tunnels dating back over 100 years. Other excursions include a visit to a Goat’s Cheese Farm and the Richard de Bas Paper Mill – the first living museum in France. Based on eight passengers traveling, charters on Enchanté start at $52,000.

Along the Caledonian Canal in the Scottish Highlands, the eight-passenger
Scottish Highlander offers some unique family-friendly attractions, such as a mountain gondola ride that soars over 1,800 feet up the Ben Nevis mountain range; a visit to the Treasures of the Earth museum, which features gemstones and fossils over 500 million years old; and time at a family-owned working farm with tractor rides.

Active families can visit an outdoor discovery park offering wall climbing, dry-skiing, quad biking, laser tag, grass sledging, and rope climbing. They can also take the scenic 84-mile steam train ride between Fort William and Mallaig – familiar to Harry Potter fans as the “Hogwarts Express” route. The entire family can also explore the Scottish coastline on a sea kayaking outing. Based on eight passengers traveling, Scottish Highlander charters start at $39,500.

“We’ve listened to the feedback of parents who want their kids to have fun on vacation, but still enjoy the opportunities for learning history, geography, and geology,” said Banks. “On a European Waterways Family Charter, our guests can focus on quality time, creating unforgettable memories together, knowing all the administrative details are taken care of by our dedicated staff.”

As part of all Family Cruises, European Waterways will also provide complimentary equipment such as highchairs, travel cots, children’s bikes & helmets, and car seats, upon request.
